Mieliala – Helsinki 1939-1945

CONCEPT DESIGN, ART DIRECTION & GRAPHIC DESIGN

N2 Albiino, 2019

Helsinki Art Museum (HAM) and Villa Hakasalmi approached us with a brief to design both the visual identity and an urban marketing experience for their joint exhibition:
STATE OF MIND – HELSINKI 1939-1945.

We based our visual identity heavily on the content of the exhibition itself. Which touch upon the drastic change in appearance and spirit of Helsinki during the winter war. The exhibition showcased pessimism and optimism as reflected by visual art and photographs, in addition to providing a broader look at the visual world that people had to get used to during wartime. As people and art was evacuated during this era, we tied it all together with a visual look of packing crates and packing tape.

The urban marketing experience was a large scale recreation of the actual wartime evacuation of the statue of three smiths in the centre of Helsinki. We designed a large packing box with lights and sound to mimic wartime and trigger that pessimism reflected by the time of its evacuation.

I was part of the concept design process and produced all the final designs.

The marketing of the exhibition went on to receive the “Vuoden viestintäteko 2021” award from Museoliitto.
